Comments
If you leave a comment, I keep what you type in the form along with your IP address and browser user-agent string, which help with spam filtering. Comments and their details are kept indefinitely so that follow-up comments from the same person can be approved automatically. Your email address is never published; an anonymized hash of it may be sent to Gravatar to look up a profile picture. Comments are screened by Akismet, an automated spam service run by Automattic.
Analytics and logs
These pages load Google Analytics, which uses cookies to record which pages were viewed, along with approximate location, device, and browser. My host and a security component of the site also keep standard access logs that include IP addresses, used to keep the site running and to block attacks.
Cookies
If you leave a comment you can opt in to saving your name, email, and website in a cookie so you don’t have to retype them next time; it lasts a year. Analytics cookies are set as described above. There are no visitor accounts on this site, so login cookies apply only to me.
Embedded content
Posts sometimes embed photos or video hosted elsewhere, such as SmugMug, Flickr, or YouTube. Those sites can set their own cookies and track your interaction with the embed exactly as if you had visited them directly.
