    Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee offers wonderful nature, history, and views. These are from an April 2021 visit to our son, Tom, who was coaching baseball at Carson Newman University, not so far in Jefferson City.

    Florida Winter 2020

    An escape to Sarasota in early March is the reward for surviving a New England February. The Gulf coast light is soft and warm well into the morning, which is forgiving for wildlife work. The beaches at Siesta Key have that powdery quartz sand that stays cool underfoot even at midday.

    The wildlife did most of the work here. An alligator sunning itself, shorebirds working the tide line, and a conch shell sitting in the right place. This trip landed just before everything shut down that spring of 2020, which gives the pictures a strange quality of normalcy in hindsight.

    Japan 2019

    The best photos from our trip to Japan in October and November of 2019. This was a wonderful trip. We had three stops:

    • Hakone at the Odakyu Hotel de Yama where we enjoyed a trip via the pirate ship and cable car to the Hakone Open Air Museum.
    • Kyoto at the RIHGA Royal Hotel Kyoto. Home of Mt. Inari which has the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Also visited the Shogun’s Palace.
    • Tokyo at the New Otani. We visited the Imperial Palace, the Edo-Tokyo Museum, and the No theater.

    At each of these stops, the most fun was just wandering around Japan. It’s very different but very easy to be there.

    2019 New York Airshow – Blue Angels & RAF Red Arrows

    The New York Airshow at Stewart Airport featured some great flying, including the Blue Angels and the RAF Red Arrows. I attended with my friend Howard. Getting up close to the planes is fun, but seeing them fly so close is really special and provided opportunity to photograph them in action.


    My Sony RX10 II really shined at this task. Being able to react quickly and shoot in bursts allowed me to capture so many quality pictures.

    Stewart International in Newburgh is a good airshow venue because it isn’t glamorous. It’s just working airport with wide open sightlines.

    Backyard Birds

    There are plenty of birds in the backyard. Here are a few favorites photographed in Sudbury, Massachusetts in the fall of 2016.

    The setup isn’t an accident. I put a 6 foot stand behind my first floor office and provided branches to perch on and food to bring them in. Chickadees, white crested nuthatches, cardinals, blue jays, and a tufted titmouse were tempted into posing for food.

  • The Butterfly Place

    The Butterfly Place

    The Butterfly Place is a single glass atrium in Westford, Massachusetts, kept warm and humid year-round. There are hundreds of butterflies flying free among the plantings. And they’re big! It’s a rare setup where you can get within inches of species you could never approach outdoors.

    If you sit still long enough they’ll land on you, so this became a lesson in patience. But he humidity on a cold lens creates fog, so let your gear warm up before you start.
